OJC August Prayer Initiative: The Congo
By Katie Conely on August 2nd, 2012

For the month of August, we are praying for the fatherless in the Republic of Congo every Friday at 6:00am in the IHOPKC Global Prayer Room, and we want you to join your prayer with ours! We want a corporate body to go before the Lord carrying this nation in our hearts and petitions. You can join us at ihopkc.org, where the prayer room is broadcasted live, 24/7. Watch now »

About Children at Risk in the Republic of Congo*
It is estimated that 15 percent of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s under 18 population are orphans, and 770,000 of them orphaned through AIDS alone. Five million children are orphans in the Congo. Most have become orphans a result of the ongoing conflict, termed “Africa’s World War,” that has endured through decades. This war has “left more than five million people dead, over a million displaced, and many more, particularly in the east of the country, living in daily fear for their lives.” Orphans who can’t be cared for by extended families are faced with a future in institutions or for many, life on the streets.

Between the months of April and June, there have been 71 attacks from the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), which is the party responsible in part for igniting the country’s bloody conflict. The Democratic Republic of Congo reported being on the receiving end of 62 of these attacks. The LRA is also accused of abducting children to use as fighters and sex slaves, and of mutilating the bodies of their victims by removing their limbs to intimidate and enact their revenge. Its fugitive leader, Joseph Kony, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for his many war crimes.

Join with Us in These Prayer Points
Tomorrow, August 3, at 6:00am, we will begin focused prayer for these children.

  • Pray from Malachi 4:6, that God will turn the hearts of many to these children, that they will have the protection they need from the adults around them.
  • Ask the Father to give dreams and visions to the children, encounters to their captives, that they would all know God and turn their hearts to Him. (Acts 2:17)
  • Pray that God will raise up those with boldness to preach the gospel. (Acts 4:29)
  • Ask the Father to come swiftly to deliver orphans in the Republic of Congo from those who seek their lives, by raising up men and women who have the resources and wisdom to set them in places of safety. (2 Thes. 3:2)
  • Pray that orphans, caregivers, soldiers in the LRA, and all who come into contact with them would know God and accept Him into their hearts. (Eph. 3:17–19)
