By Kinsey Thurlow on October 10th, 2012

For the month of October, we are praying for the fatherless in Thailand every Friday at 6:00am in the IHOPKC Global Prayer Room, and we want you to join your prayer with ours! We want a corporate body to go before the Lord carrying this nation in our hearts and petitions. You can join us at ihopkc.org, where the prayer room is broadcasted live, 24/7. Watch the webstream »

About Children at Risk in Thailand

As a country of nearly 67 million people, Christians represent only 1.6 percent of the population of Thailand. A number of strongholds, including Buddhism and occult practices, have created a permeating culture of darkness throughout the nation.

Thailand’s children know this darkness. Scattered across the nation, children have been left orphaned, each having a name, a face, and a story. Four hundred thousand of these children have lost one or both parents to AIDS. [1] Many more live in severe poverty.

Over 5 million of Thai children are enslaved in child labor, and an increasing number are becoming victims of sex trafficking. An estimated 20 percent of girls between the ages of 11 and 17 become involved in the sex industry. [2]

Prostitution has been an accepted part of Thai culture for many years. In 1957, there were approximately 20,000 prostitutes in Thailand. This already devastating number rose to 400,000 in only 7 years’ time. In 1964, the US established seven military bases in the country, and Thailand agreed to provide “rest and recreation” to American servicemen. Prostitution quickly became a large-scale business in Thailand, and Senator J. William Fulbright described it as Thailand becoming “an American brothel.” [3]

Since that time, sex tourism in Thailand has escalated and is one of the major contributors to prostitution, specifically child prostitution. The sex industry currently contributes about 14 percent to the GDP of the country. [4]

Join with Us in These Prayer Points

  • Pray from Malachi 4:6, that God will turn the hearts of many to these children, and that the eyes of many would be opened to the struggle of the fatherless in Thailand.
  • Ask the Father to give dreams and visions to the children, encounters to those that seek to harm them, that they would all know God and turn their hearts to Him. (Acts 2:17)
  • Pray that God will raise up those with boldness to preach the gospel in Thailand. (Acts 4:29)
  • Ask the Father to come swiftly to deliver orphans in Thailand from those who seek to harm them, by raising up men and women who have the resources and wisdom to set them in places of safety. (2 Thes. 3:2)
  • Pray that orphans, caregivers, and all who come into contact with them would know God and accept Him into their hearts. (Eph. 3:17–19)
